Community transport providers on the right route to growth!
LAT is well known in West Yorkshire for providing much needed specialist and community transport and related learning services. It has been doing so for over ten years, and is the largest most successful provider of its type in the region. From its Leeds depot, LAT currently operates 13 minibuses and one coach, employs 19 staff and has a pool of over 30 volunteers. It has a proven track record in supporting local community organisations through its Group Transport services, as well as individuals who find it difficult to use public transport through its volunteer car scheme. LAT recently successfully tendered for nine Special Education Needs home to school transport contracts for the 2008/2009 academic year with Leeds City Council.
HCT Group has been operating in the Leeds area under its CT Plus Yorkshire brand since 2006 and has been successfully applying the social enterprise model in the operation of Mybus yellow school bus routes on behalf of Metro. HCT Group operates in the commercial arena as well as being a leading supplier of community transport services. HCT, in conjunction with ECT Group, currently operates a major transport contract for the Olympic Delivery Authority transporting workers from key pick up points between construction areas, venues and compounds within the Olympic Park.
Donna Dixon, Manager of LAT and 2006 winner of the West Yorkshire Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, said: “This is an exciting time for us. The team at LAT is fully committed to ensuring that we are offering services that make a real difference to the quality of life of local people. Through this move we will be able to consolidate our success and develop our achievements. Within West Yorkshire, and in particular the City of Leeds, there is an under representation of CT services and we are confident that LAT & HCT can together fill the gaps in much needed passenger services.” Don Barron, Chair of LAT, also welcomed today’s announcement, saying: “This is a really positive step in the development of community transport services in Leeds. We are really looking forward to working with HCT.”
Dai Powell, Chief Executive of HCT and Social Enterprise Ambassador, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity. Community transport is at the heart of what we do and our profits from our commercial work are reinvested into providing services for the communities we operate within. Our partnership with LAT will enable us to work together to do this effectively for the people of West Yorkshire.”
